The Pleasures of Tranquillity

Abstract Epicurus posited that the best life involves greatest pleasures. He also held it attaining tranquillity. Many commentators, including Ken Binmore, have expressed scepticism these two claims are compatible. For, they argue, Epicurus’ tranquil is so austere hard to see how could be maximally pleasurable. Here, I offer an Epicurean account of pleasures consider different ways valuing lives from a hedonistic point view. Benthamite hedonists value by sum minus pains, weighted intensity and duration. Meanwhile, Binmore proposes valued their worst episode. In contrast, outline argument for why one in which person attains tranquillity tastes its until death.
